A Beautiful Language

by David
(Louisiana)

I have been exposed to various forms of the French language my entire life. Growing up in South Louisiana, my entire family spoke Cajun French, and one of my grandmothers could not speak English at all. I was among the first generation of my family to speak English as my first language.

My formal education in the language began in elementary school and continued though my undergraduate degree. I took two years of French in high school, spent a summer in France, and then took five semesters in college. It is an absolutely beautiful language and one that typically is not difficult for native speakers of English to learn.

French is one of the Romance languages, meaning it developed as a dialect of latin over time. So once you have learned French, it is relatively easy to learn the other Romance languages, including Spanish.

I highly recommend studying French to anyone interested in learning a second language.
