Buy a Pocket Dictionary

One of the best things you can buy to help you learn a new language is a pocket dictionary. And make sure to actually keep it in your pocket.

Keep it with you wherever you go, and whenever you encounter things or situations that you would like to say in your new language, look it up. When you get home, you can write these new words down to add to your studies. This will really help you begin to think in your new language.

The best way to learn a new language is to make sure you try to actually communicate in it. And to communicate, you will need to build a vocabulary of words. Even if you have not yet learned the correct tense or grammatical format, simply having the right core words will go a long way towards conveying ideas.

Build upon having words at your disposal and with time and experience, you will begin to figure out how to put them together. But concentrate on the vocabulary and notice what words you regularly use each day in your own language. Use your pocket dictionary to learn the foreign language equivalents and you will find ways to express yourself and also gives you new words to practice the grammar skills you've picked up so far.

I studied Japanese for a year just using software and a textbook, but I didn't try to create my own sentences very often because I simply did not know the words. Once I started carrying around a pocket dictionary, I began to feel more confident and language learning became much more fun and vibrant.
