French - a necessity
by Debbie
I grew up in Quebec, so learning french was a necessity. I grew up in an English household and my parents placed me in a French school when I was 5. I had no choice but to learn the language quickly since nobody spoke English. I think the fact that I was 5, helped. The younger the child, the easier it is to learn a language. I am perfectly bilingual.
However, growing up in Quebec, I began to resent the french language. But I think that had more to do with the the political situation in Quebec, than anything else. As an adult, I never taught my children the language. I regret that now. I am trying to teach them now, but it is a lot harder than starting when they are babies. I now live in the US and my children will definitely be taking French classes in Middle School.
Knowing more than 1 language is definitely an asset in life, for traveling and employment. I plan to continue their home training as well.
