Read English Books in Translation

by Janet
(London, UK)

Reading an English book tranlated into your target language is a great way to start - especially if you've read the English version and already know what's going on. It means that you'll rarely come across a peculiar idiom that won't translate into English and often the translation process means that the syntax is often more similar to English than a book originally written in the target language.

Lots of books are available - Agatha Christie and J K Rowling to name two well-known examples.
