I probably would not recommend Rosetta Stone for languages like Spanish, French or German, where resources for a potential student are plentiful. However, for a relatively minor European language like Dutch, Rosetta Stone is probably the best starting resource, simply because there are few others out there. The program is pretty good at providing a foundation of vocabulary and grammar, but as others have noted, the "one size fits all" approach to language doesn't allow for learning many of the subtler aspects of idiomatic speech. I definately recommend that if you are serious about learning another language, don't rely soley on Rosetta Stone- supplement your study with grammar texts, dictionaries, verb conjugations, foreign web newscasts, music, etc. Rosetta Stone will help, but by itself it isn't nearly sufficient. Perhaps the company motto should actually be "The fastest way to build a language foundation, guaranteed."
