Watch US shows dubbed in a target language

by full name
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

I'd like to learn Japanese just for fun of knowing something original but I hate manga, j-pop, bland food, martial arts movies, institutionalized alcoholism and sexual perversion, everything kawaii and other infantile things that japanese learners seem to enjoy.

I ordered 6 seasons of a Sex and the City DVD from amazon japan and find them very useful. The episodes can be watched in either english or japanese and they have english or japanese subtitle options. First I watch them in japanese with english subtitles on and then rewatch them in japanese without subtitles. There is a a familiar subject that you enjoy watching, real language with natural speed and good enunciation and a modern vocabulary.

Some drawbaks include a slight difference between spoken Japanese and provided japanese subtitles so that trying to read what you listen to for better understanding may not work. Also Japanese dvds are region 2 and us is region 1 so either watch them on your computer changing the DVD region to 2 and using GOM software for example(http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html) or get a region free DVD player.
